This review from Publisher’s Weekly was SUCH a wonderful surprise to kick off my weekend. I mean… “fans of Abbott Elementary will be CHARMED”!?! Could there be a better review?

My parents are in town visiting and it has been an absolute joy having them here and seeing our day-to-day life. So much so that my parents and I are meeting with a real estate agent tomorrow to check out some houses 👀

So getting a review like this has just been the absolute icing on the wonderful cake of life. AND YES, I know I am sappy and annoying, BUT I may never get trade reviews again and I want to relish these because they are all amazing and I am so happy to see readers resonating with my book.

A lot of publishers liked my writing but didn’t resonate with this book. It’s a “slower” book (I believe my agent used the word ‘quieter’😅)- not a whole hell of a lot happens. I had NO idea what I was doing when writing this book- I hadn’t studied any craft and when I say I wrote a book from the heart, I wrote a book from my ("quiet”) heart. This book isn’t a plot driven book, but entirely character driven and therefore, to “get into” this book, you have to connect with the characters. And not everyone will, and I understood that when I sold this- however, to see that there ARE people finding it, connecting with the characters and still loving my book, really makes me proud.

So, huge thank you to Publisher’s Weekly for seeing Lucy as she is and celebrating how she comes into herself, because it really is a beautiful journey (in my totally unbiased opinion!)

Thank you to everyone for your love and support and I hope you all will fall for Lucy, too! 2 more months!

Baby got her second trade review!

Huge thanks to Library Journal because, like most of us here, I love our librarians. I remember lugging all my crap into my daughter's stroller to bring her to the library from when she was freshly popped out and we would do every single "Mommy + Me" class where I would tire her out and then patiently wait for her to pass out so I could loiter in the library until she woke up. I loved, LOVED those days and kind of miss them, to be honest, because if you've ever been to the library with a 4 year old, well, you KNOW. It's pure chaos.

BUT I AM (per usual) DIGRESSING. Thank you to Library Journal for this beautiful review and I hope readers will clamor for more because I have a 2 book contract and hope I don't scare everyone off so that you will come back and read my second one, when it's out (or written 😅)

Thank you, thank you for all the kind and lovely words and comments and DM's you have all been sending me. I have had a bit of a bumpy ride these last few weeks (all good things!) but knowing I have a team of cheerleaders rooting me on has been the absolute best! And now to have the LIBRARIANS?!!? Dream made!

So I want to talk about my book's launch because w

So I want to talk about my book's launch because well, my launch day will be a little... underwhelming.

Basically, I won't be doing an in-person launch event or having preorder incentives or anything flashy because, well, I live outside of the States and there just isn't the opportunity, or budget, to fly in just for my release or mail cute extras out. Seriously, check out international shipping rates and it *might* just be cheaper to buy a flight instead and personally hand deliver my book!

I am not going to lie, when I sold my book, I absolutely imagined having a fun launch event. And for a while, I wondered if I should fly over for the release. But when my release date changed and wouldn’t be at the same time as my daughter’s school break, I knew it wasn’t meant to be. It wasn’t worth the chaos of planning a trip and pulling her out of school (because no way am I doing a book launch without her!).

So, here are some things I plan on doing:
1️⃣ Taking the day off from working (I am self employed so this one is not too challenging a task)
2️⃣ Having a party at a local venue and inviting everyone I know- even though they haven’t and will probably never read my book (yes, including my husband)
3️⃣ Ordering a giant custom cake of my book because I am extra
4️⃣ And I plan on asking you all for help to make this day special! I am going to be launching a “street team” soon and will need your help getting the word out about my book. I am not entirely sure what this looks like yet, but it will probably involve asking for your help to share my book, including reviews, on release day and helping to hype it out online!

I have a tiny form on the link in the bio to collect your email address if you’d like to join my virtual street team and help hype up the book but if you have any questions or ideas, feel free to also slide into my DM’s!

And for anyone worried about committing, please know this will be a very low stress and hopefully somewhat fun, commitment. I won’t be verifying or checking reviews or posts and am really just looking for some help/excited friends to help promote the book when it’s out! Thank you! ❤️

I made the mistake of venturing onto Threads the other day where I learned apparently we should not be promoting our books and instead talk about ourselves so you will feel connected to us and then, well, uh buy our books?

Maybe I misunderstood but I quickly "noped" out of that conversation because I cannot just talk about myself because for one, I am boring. All I do is work, read books, hang out with my kid and eat tacos. I am legitimately writing this as my body is still processing the 4 tacos I just inhaled AND the tacos I ate last night at 11pm.

In addition to being boring, I am also a bit private. Online at least. In real life, my house is basically always open because we have a huge family and strong WiFi so we're the official hang out spot.

But seriously, it's hard putting yourself out there- in whatever capacity. It's scary, too. I am still navigating through what I feel comfortable sharing and what I don't- and that's in addition to figuring out my role in marketing my book. I also have to be protective of my mental health because that's always my #1 goal, so I hope you'll be patient as I figure this stuff out!

In the mean time, please be impressed by my trope arrows graphic that you have probably seen 18,000 times before. Are these the best/right tropes to highlight? Guys, i don't knoww....I picked some random things and then spent 2 hours playing with the pink background so it didn't look too much like PeptoBismol.

So, I guess this is a long way to say: my book releases in 2ish months and I will need to ramp up the marketing so please do not abandon me if my posts get boring and sales-y and THANK YOU all for your support and love and excitement these last few months! ❤️

To say this year was a rollercoaster would be an understatement and I had so many ups and downs that I thought I might share some of the ways I protected my mental health and will continue to do so in 2024 as my debut month (March eeeeke!) approaches.

1. I set zero expectations: I talk about this a lot and I know it can be a bit of a cynical defense mechanism, but it also helps ensure that I don't set myself up for disappointment. I am one of the few people who actually don't like/want to know what's going on behind the scenes of my publisher because whatever *does* happen turns out to be a wildly pleasant surprise.

2. I limited who can tag me: I figured out how to remove the ability for people who I don’t follow to tag me after getting tagged in a review that while not inaccurate or hurtful, was not positive. And most importantly, it didn’t make me feel great, so I am going to try to limit opportunities for that to happen again.

3. I don’t go on Goodreads or other review sites. While I know there is discourse on how authors should read reviews to improve their craft, I respectfully disagree. I have both critique partners and an editor I strongly trust and I know my book isn’t for everyone and that’s okay- and it’s equally okay for me to not seek out those reviews, too.

4. I keep my writing circle close. I am very lucky to have a few places where I can go and, for lack of a better word, bitch. I strongly recommend this for every author. Bitching is part of the creative process, after all.
